{"id":129,"date":"2021-03-13T08:48:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-13T13:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordofweek.com\/?p=129"},"modified":"2021-03-13T12:58:38","modified_gmt":"2021-03-13T17:58:38","slug":"word-of-the-week-48-fungible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordofweek.com\/?p=129","title":{"rendered":"<strong>W<\/strong><strong>ORD OF THE <\/strong><strong>W<\/strong><strong>EEK <\/strong><strong>#48 \u2013 fungible<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cMoney if fungible.\u201d WSJ<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definition: Being something (such as money or a commodity) of such a nature that one part or quantity may be replaced by another equal part or quantity in paying a debt or settling an account.&nbsp; Capable of mutual substitution: interchangeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOil, wheat, and lumber are&nbsp;<strong>fungible<\/strong>&nbsp;commodities.\u201d<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>The court&#8217;s postulate is that male and female jurors must be regarded as&nbsp;fungible.\u201d<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pronounced as one might expect.&nbsp;&nbsp; FUN jeble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a fun word to do a little research on and dropped me into a minor <em>rabbit hole* <\/em>&nbsp;that I am still struggling to dig myself out of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems obvious that if you have five one dollar bills you could replace those with one five dollar bill, making money <strong>fungible <\/strong>(interchangeable).&nbsp; However, that would not be true if you had a valuable quarter.&nbsp; That money would then be non-fungible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I ran across this word &#8220;money is <strong>fungible<\/strong>&#8221; in a Wall Street Journal article on the \u201cCovid Relief Bill\u201d just signed into law.&nbsp; If you are interested in how this was used in the article send me an email, and I will send you details.  cmmns@aol.com<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if an item is fungible what is non-fungible.&nbsp; Perhaps the original Mona Lisa is an example of a non-fungible asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This brought up the subject of the recent introduction of \u201cnon-fungible tokens&#8221;, (NFT)\u201d, which dropped me into that rabbit hole.&nbsp; An NFT is an original, (art, video and others) that is stored digitally on blockchain, much like Bitcoin.&nbsp; It is a new method of guaranteeing originality. These originals are now being auctioned and paid for with Ethereum crypto currency.&nbsp; As bizarre as this may seem, these NFTs are being sold by the millions for millions of dollars (who knew).&nbsp; Even the famous auction house Christies has one coming up for sale.&nbsp; An NFT of a 10-second video artwork sold for $6.6 million in late February.
