{"id":192,"date":"2021-04-09T16:36:26","date_gmt":"2021-04-09T21:36:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordofweek.com\/?p=192"},"modified":"2021-04-10T07:53:36","modified_gmt":"2021-04-10T12:53:36","slug":"word-of-the-week-52-blockchain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordofweek.com\/?p=192","title":{"rendered":"<strong>W<\/strong><strong>ORD OF THE <\/strong><strong>W<\/strong><strong>EEK <\/strong><strong>#52 \u2013 <a>Blockchain<\/a><\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the news\u2026..<br><br>Defined as a digital database containing information (such as records of financial transactions) that can be simultaneously used and shared within a large decentralized, publicly accessible network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The technology at the heart of bitcoin and other virtual currencies,\u00a0<em>blockchain<\/em>\u00a0is an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OK\u2026so I am late to the party and behind the proverbial curve..\u00a0 I accept that.\u00a0 If you are alive and kicking you have some knowledge of Blockchain. But read on&#8230;..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOne of the most disruptive technologies of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century\u201d Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis could be as world-changing as the internet\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 Kiplinger\u2019s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cFortune 500 companies are spending billions\u201d\u00a0 New York Times<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our publisher made the decision to include Blockchain as our Word of the Week because&#8230;.over my 77 years I have lived through a lot of game-changing technologies.\u00a0 Television in the 50s.\u00a0 Personal computers and faxes in the 80s.\u00a0 Internet in the 90s.\u00a0 Improved internet and smart phones in the 2000s with business transferring from paper to digital\u2026throwing away those antiquated file cabinets.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, from my brief experience, I believe that this Blockchain technology, in combination with artificial intelligence, just may be the biggest game-changer of all&#8230;..and it&#8217;s just getting started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have all heard of bitcoin, a digital store of value, which uses Blockchain technology.&nbsp; Termed a crypto or virtual currency, there are now hundreds if not thousands of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is decentralized and allows for one to hold an asset and make payments outside of the banking system and government oversight, and since there is a finite number of bitcoins, it has become a true example of worldwide supply and demand (Yes, I took econ 101).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China recently announced that they are developing their own cryptocurrency, and it is predicted by some that the US will one day do the same. Perhaps replacing paper money?\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Blockchain is going to do much more than act as a store of value.&nbsp; It is going to be used in ways not yet imagined. <em>Forbes<\/em>&nbsp;recently compiled a list of 50 big-name firms planning to supercharge their operations with Blockchain.&nbsp; Our government is also using and planning on using this technology in many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The non-fungible tokens (NFTs) we explained in a previous Word of the Week was created with Blockchain, and they are becoming huge!  HUGE!<br><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non-fungible_token\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non-fungible_token<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The argument\u2026..<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cPrivate blockchains have been proposed for business use but\u00a0Computerworld\u00a0called the marketing of such privatized blockchains without a proper security mode snake oil. However, others have argued that permissioned blockchains, if carefully designed, may be more decentralized and therefore secure in practice than permissionless ones.\u201d<\/em> Wikipedia<br><br>Decentralization and security seem to be the keys&#8230;.outside of anyone&#8217;s ability to control&#8230;.including the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is complex.
