T\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate<\/em><\/strong>, what a great noun to have in your verbal arsenal.  The definition is so simple  It means a private conversation between two people.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its pronunciation is also very simple, so simple in fact, that it would be hard to screw up. TET (as in let) uh TET (also as in let).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve always thought of it as a private meeting between lovers\u2026..perhaps illicit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it can also be used to describe private meetings between any two individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe world\u2019s leaders had a private t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate <\/strong>before the press conference.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey had a quiet t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate <\/strong>over dinner last night.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Langston Hughes \u2013 1901 \u2013 1967<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of America\u2019s great poets, he was also a social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from\u00a0Joplin, Missouri. One of the earliest innovators of the literary art form called\u00a0jazz poetry, Hughes is best known as a leader of the\u00a0Harlem Renaissance. He famously wrote about the period that “the Negro was in vogue”, which was later paraphrased as “when Harlem was in vogue.”

Harlem, at that time, also produced some great jazz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
