Subordinating the island isn\u2019t only about incorporating a <\/em><strong><em>putative<\/em><\/strong><em> lost province\u2014it would be a vital step toward establishing Chinese hegemony (Word of Week #50)\u2026.&nbsp;WSJ<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putative is another great word for our fabulous Word of the Week.&nbsp; It is simple, easy to pronounce with a simple definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is an adjective defined as \u201cgenerally considered or reputed to be.&nbsp; Assumed to exist or to have existed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHis <strong>putative<\/strong> conversation had a big impact on the events of my life.\u201d<\/em>  This assumes the conversation took place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is pronounced exactly as you might expect\u201d&nbsp; PEWT ah tiv (tiv as in give)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>We are a nation willing to sell out its past for <strong>putative <\/strong>progress.\u201d <\/em>Newsweek<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe panel said that more recent data had raised questions about the&nbsp;<strong>putative<\/strong><\/em><em>&nbsp;benefits for cancer, and that more research was needed\u201d.\u2014&nbsp;The New York Times,&nbsp;13 Oct. 2021<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is another great word to have in your verbal arsenal.&nbsp; Using it properly will make you appear intelligent (even if you are not) but not pretentious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about this great word and to hear the proper pronunciation go to:<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/putative\">https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/putative<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Previous \u201cWord of the Week\u201d revisited<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>puerile &#8211; to act or communicate in a juvenile, silly or childish manner. \u201cHis puerile ways are giving a poor impression at his job interviews\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMature minds, puerile at heart.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/em><br><em>Keep cherishing your childish part.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp; Roopai Soni<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phrase of the Week:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cgerrymandering\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OK\u2026.I know&#8230;.its not really a phrase, rather a word that we hear often in the news as the election cycle returns\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhen their State Legislature put forward congressional maps this month, the&nbsp;New York Times&nbsp;said the House seats \u201cwould be among the most gerrymandered in the country.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word gerrymandering just sounds pejorative doesn&#8217;t it.\u00a0 (pejorative &#8211; Word of the week #36). It is defined as \u201cmanipulate the boundaries of an electoral constituency so as to favor one party or class. It is a practice intended to establish an arguably unfair political advantage for a particular\u00a0party\u00a0or group by\u00a0manipulating\u00a0the boundaries of\u00a0electoral districts.&#8221; &#8211; Wikipedia<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best explanation I have heard is that it is a method for politicians to select their voters rather than the voters selecting their politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It appears that both parties have been accused of gerrymandering.
